I love a great upholstered headboard - it can glam up or tone down a room, depending on the style, fabric, and overall design. I do not currently have an upholstered headboard, but am in the market for one. I have rounded up a number of beautiful headboards I would love to buy for my bedroom, but also discovered a handful of amazing DIY headboards. The question becomes: to buy or DIY?

Obviously, it would be easier to buy. We have a LOT going on in the upcoming months, and 90% of me says, "Are you joking? You have to buy. It will be ordered, delivered, and set up with the push of a button." However, the other 10% says, "You have to DIY! This would be such a fun, (semi)simple project - not to mention a savings of $500 or more." As you can see, I am in quite the predicament!

I would love your thoughts...should I buy or DIY?
DIY! Then post a very thorough tutorial on how to do it so I can also DIY ;)
ReplyDelete:) If I do a DIY, I will definitely be documenting & posting the tutorial!

You should "Try" yourself. I did my own and LOVE it. I wish I could send you a pic. It was really foam matress toppers, fabric, buttons, and plywood. Still spent about $125 on it but I got to design myself. You will need a staple gun (big one and yard and needle for the buttons). that should be about it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll do a tutorial on my blog over at www.lookslikelulu.blogspot.com
I love your blog btw~
Thanks, LuLu! :) You should post a tutorial!

I think it depends how anal you are. I've seen some great DIY headboards, but I have to say that all the ones with the nailhead trim or tufted backs are not quite perfect. I mean, I can tell they are a DIY. I know something like this would drive me crazy, so I would probably buy. However, a simple foam headboard with great fabric is defnitely worht the DIY :)
ReplyDeleteLaura - that's the thing...I am ultra picky. It would have to be perfect...which is why the DIY is scaring me, I definitely don't want it to look like a DIY - especially since I'd be getting rid of my current, pretty iron bed from Pottery Barn!

Definitely DIY. My hubby made our headboard and it's just so much more special. Plus it's really inexpensive to make. If you try to make one yourself and it doesn't turn out perfect you can always put it in your guest bedroom :)
ReplyDeleteThat is true, Lilly! :) I'd love to see yours!

These headboards are soooo pretty! I think you should definitely try to DIY it! I'm sure it'll come out great and you'll be so proud to show it off and say you did it! But you're going to have to document everything you did, because I'd like to give it a go too :)

Buy! ha ha ha ...... as a mama of two little ones (3 & 1) . . . it is worth the extra $500 to get some time to put your feet up and rest before le bebe arrives : )
ReplyDeleteThe green one is amazing--- recreate it!!
ReplyDeleteI'd say DIY! But that's the way I am...I might say otherwise if I had le bebes too. :)
